SYNOPSIS: A miserly and miserable man, Ebenezer Scrooge greets each Christmas with “Bah! Humbug!” until he is visited one Christmas Eve by the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Christmas Present and Christmas Future. In Charles Dickens’ beloved classic, the three spirits show Scrooge happy memories from his past, difficult realities from the present and a grim future should he continue his closed-hearted ways. Throughout his journey, Scrooge is forced to reckon with the man he has become and contemplate the man he could be — but only if his restless night leads to a change of heart by morning.

A new take on a beloved classic! Join us for this new adaptation by Lavina Jadhwani that is produced annually at the Guthrie Theatre in Minneapolis.

SCRIPTS: Scripts are available to check out with a $10 refundable deposit. Please call (319) 277-5283 for more info.

REHEARSALS:  Will start at the end of September. Most rehearsals begin after 6:00PM on weeknights and during the day on weekends. You’ll have the chance to fill out a conflict calendar at the auditions, so be sure to bring your schedule with you.

PERFORMANCES: All performances will take place on the main stage of the Oster Regent Theatre, located at 103 Main St, Cedar Falls, IA.

CASTING NOTES: Performers of all ethnic, racial, sexual, and gender identities, abilities, and backgrounds are encouraged, needed and welcomed. Actors of all identities are welcomed and encouraged to submit for any and all of the roles listed with the understanding that there are individual characters that have specific identities specified within the script. No experience necessary. All roles—except Ebenezer Scrooge—are open.

AUDITION INSTRUCTIONS:

Acting auditions will consist of reading directly from scenes in the script and movement exercises. A music and dance portion may also be required. Prepared monologues and music are NOT required. If you are unable to audition at the designated times, a one-on-one time can be arranged.

AVAILABLE ROLES:

Jacob Marley – M, Age 60+:  The ghost of Ebenezer Scrooge’s late business partner. A specter of shame and grief, come to warn Scrooge of the error of his ways, and to herald the arrival of the three Spirits who shall meet with Scrooge on Christmas Eve.

The Ghost of Christmas Past – Any gender, any age:  The gentlest spirit who meets with Scrooge, come to remind him of his youth; ferrying him through the images of a happiness long forgotten, a love long forsaken, and an optimism long abandoned.

The Ghost of Christmas Present – Any gender, any age:  A jovial and powerful spirit, more than a match for Scrooge’s stubborn attitude. This spirit exhibits to Scrooge how the errors of his ways impact the lives of the only people left who care for him.

The Ghost of Christmas Future – Any gender, any age: This role has no spoken words, but makes up for it in immense presence. Ominous and chilling. The most ghost-like of any of our spirits, come to show Scrooge the cold and lonely fate that will greet him should he not change in his ways.

Bob Cratchit – M, Age 40-50:  Scrooge’s clerk, underpaid and overworked. Feeble but deeply kind-hearted and generous despite his poverty. Loves his family very much. The very opposite of Scrooge in temperament.

Fred – M, Age 25-40:  A big-hearted young man who sees the good in Scrooge where nobody else can. Scrooge’s only living relative.

Auditioning at Cedar Falls Community Theatre

Auditions take place 8 to 10 weeks ahead of the production dates. We encourage everyone to audition and do not discriminate. Everyone will receive consideration without regard to race, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, or disability.

We'll try to take the pressure off to make the process enjoyable. Here are a few tips to help:

Prepare

Research the show and consider where you might fit in the cast. Familiarity should help you find your own voice, perspective or "take" on the role. You are welcome to rent a script ahead of time to help you prepare, just stop by during business hours.

Be Proactive About Your Schedule and Availability

Bring your calendar for the next couple of months. The director will want to know about pre-existing commitments now... not after you are cast.

Be Gracious

Not everyone can be the lead. The director has reasons for the decisions made and we ask that you respect that. You may be offered a role that you weren't planning for or be asked to help the show in other areas.

Be On Time

Please respect the production team and your fellow auditionees by showing up to audition on time. If you might have a conflict that prevents you from coming on time, reach out to the director ahead of time.

Have Fun

Because that's what theatre is all about!
