SYNOPSIS: For seven years, a certain boy wizard went to a certain Wizard School and conquered evil. This, however, is not his story. This is the story of the Puffs... who just happened to be there too. This clever and inventive play gives a new look at a familiar adventure from the perspective of three potential heroes just trying to make it through a magic school that proves to be very dangerous for children. Alongside them are the Puffs, a group of well-meaning, loyal outsiders with a thing for badgers. Their epic journey takes the classic story to new places and reimagines what a boy wizard hero can be.

Puffs is not authorized, sanctioned, licensed or endorsed by J.K. Rowling, Warner Bros. or any person or company associated with the Harry Potter books, films or play.

SCRIPTS: Scripts are available to check out with a $10 refundable deposit one month prior to auditions. Please call (319) 277-5283 for more info, or stop by the Box Office Mon-Fri 12-4PM.

REHEARSALS: Rehearsals will begin in early August. Most rehearsals begin after 6:00pm on weeknights and during the day on weekends. You’ll have the chance to provide or complete a conflict calendar at the auditions, so be sure to bring your schedule with you.

CASTING NOTES:

Performers of all ethnic, racial, sexual, and gender identities, abilities, and backgrounds are encouraged, needed and welcomed. Actors of all identities are welcomed and encouraged to submit for any and all of the roles listed with the understanding that there may be individual characters that have specific identities specified within the script. No experience necessary.

AVAILABLE ROLES:

All actors must be 16+. Note that some characters may have different dialect / accents requirements.

Wayne Hopkins - Our hero, yet nerdy - A kid with a great heart who is determined to be the hero, even if a certain boy with

a magic scar keeps stealing his thunder. Likes video games and comic books, does not know anything about magic, or the world of magic. Best friends with Oliver and Megan.

Oliver Rivers - A part of the main trio. Incredibly good at math and proud of it. Also a nerd. Once at magic school he

discovers he isn’t at the top of his class anymore. His new challenge is friendship and even love... comedic chops, youthful.

Megan Jones - Also a part of the main trio. During the beginning of the show she is trying to live up to her mother’s

reputation (a dark wizard who is in Wiz Priz for being a bad-ass Death Buddy). However, over time her tough appearance starts to soften and the once defiant, and headstrong girl shows of to the audience a side of her that truly just wants to be accepted.

Narrator - The host of the evening: They know everything about the Puffs and A Certain School of Magic. Improv background is a plus! Must have comedic timing in order to keep the audience engaged.

Ernie Mac - An Irish boy who fancies himself as "the best Puff”. Loud and proud. Also plays A Very Tall Man / Seamus / A Certain Potions Teacher / Professor Turban / Ghost History

Teach / Professor Locky / Mr. Nick / Sal / Second Headmaster / Real Mr. Moody

Hannah - Shy. Very shy. Also plays First Headmaster / Professor McG / Professor Sproutty / Xavia Jones / Professor Lanny / Runes Teach / Ms. Babble

J. Finch Fletchley - Boyish & fun. Chipper and happy except, when his life is in mortal danger. Also plays Uncle Dave / Goyle / A Fat Friar / Clumsy Longbottom / Hermeoone #3 / Viktor / Mr. Bagman / Zach Smith (great improvisor)

Leanne - A little distant. A little random. Is possibly a genius or really, really stupid. But has a really strong heart. The Puffiest of the Puffs. Also plays Ginny / Helga / Frenchy

Sally Perks - She goes to school here? A near-sighted Puff who refuses to wear her glasses. She has a crush on Wayne and would do anything for him to notice. Also plays Hermeoone / Blondo Malfoy / Rowena / Rita Scooter / Bippy

Susie Bones - Sad. Gloomy. Think Eeyore from “Winnie the Pooh.” Constantly in fear of her or her family dying. Also plays Harry / Colin / Hermeoone #2 / Ric Gryff / Myrtle

Cedric / Mr. Voldy - An appealing comic actor to play the pivotal roles of Cedric in Act I and Mr. Voldy in Act II. A champion. Athletic, winning, popular, and charming. Everyone’s favorite, but still loyal, patient, and kind. A leading example of a Puff. Mr. Voldy: Evil. Like, reeeaaally evil. Wants to rule the world in shadows and darkness and terror.

Death Buddies to be played by all actors.

Auditioning at Cedar Falls Community Theatre

Auditions take place 8 to 10 weeks ahead of the production dates. We encourage everyone to audition and do not discriminate. Everyone will receive consideration without regard to race, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, or disability.

We'll try to take the pressure off to make the process enjoyable. Here are a few tips to help:

Prepare

Research the show and consider where you might fit in the cast. Familiarity should help you find your own voice, perspective or "take" on the role. You are welcome to rent a script ahead of time to help you prepare, just stop by during business hours.

Be Proactive About Your Schedule and Availability

Bring your calendar for the next couple of months. The director will want to know about pre-existing commitments now... not after you are cast.

Be Gracious

Not everyone can be the lead. The director has reasons for the decisions made and we ask that you respect that. You may be offered a role that you weren't planning for or be asked to help the show in other areas.

Be On Time

Please respect the production team and your fellow auditionees by showing up to audition on time. If you might have a conflict that prevents you from coming on time, reach out to the director ahead of time.

Have Fun

Because that's what theatre is all about!
